Summary: Soil pH management through liming is perhaps one of the most important soil management activities a farmer performs. In fact, soil pH is often referred to as the “master variable” because it is so important to soil chemistry and biology and therefore a soil’s ability to supply nutrients to growing plants. There are different materials that can be used to “lime” or raise a soil’s pH into the proper range. Unfortunately, there are also many products on the market that are promoted as better or faster than ag lime, when in fact they have no liming value. This presentation will help consultants, growers, and other practitioners in regions where liming is necessary to judge potential liming materials and decide if they are legitimate. Specifically, in this presentation practitioners will learn some causes of soil acidity, the chemistry behind liming, and how to quantify a lime product’s effectiveness.
