A diverse audience of more than 315 participants of the 2006 National Soybean Rust Symposium appreciated another tremendously successful symposium this year. A total of 44 oral presentations and 67 posters comprised the event which was coordinated by APS in partnership with 22 key related organizations.

Organizing Committee  Representatives from academia, government and industry were involved in the development of the symposium.

Symposium Report  Compiled notes and discussions on each general and concurrent session, available for review and distribution. Volunteers were pre-assigned to record key points in every session. These notes are not a complete record of the comments made by individuals, but convey a general sense of the discussions that took place.

Attendees of the 2006 National Soybean Rust Symposium enjoyed the opening poster reception, where more than 60 posters were available for review.


 

Organizers (left to right) Anne Dorrance, Technical Committee Co-Chair; Don Hershman, Symposium Coordinator; and John Rupe, Technical Committee Co-Chair successfully coordinated a comprehensive program for a diverse audience including scientists and commodity, government, and industry stakeholders.

 

 

USDA Under Secretary Gale Buchanan provided opening "thanks" to all those involved in the successful efforts of the collaborative soybean rust efforts.

 

The attendees listened intently to the symposium's first general session presentations, which provided a recap of soybean rust activity in 2006.


 

The symposium encouraged interaction between participants and presenters through out the meeting. Pictured here is Kitty Cardwell, CSREES, during the general session question period.

 

This year's symposium featured in-depth concurrent sessions allowing a large amount of information to be covered in a short time, with a total of 44 presentations during the meeting.

Participants enjoyed the opportunity to reconnect with colleagues and compare information during the reception hosted by the 22 sponsoring organizations.


 

Rigoberto Gonzalez Gomez, accompanied by translator and colleague Arcenio Gutierrez-Esterada, provided information about the efforts Mexico has in place to address soybean rust.

 

Providing time for interactions after all the presentations was a key aspect of the symposium, featured here is the panel of presenters from the general session on the present situation with soybean rust.
