Strobiluron fungicide greening effects on soybeans in Alabama, 2006 and 2007: Application timing and desiccants

Many soybean fields in Alabama where strobiluron fungicides had been applied to prevent Asian soybean rust (ASR) experienced retention of green leaves after pod maturity in 2005. Many producers delayed harvest until frost or weathering removed these leaves, leading to seed deterioration and losses due to shattering. Producers who harvested these fields before sufficient drydown experienced greatly reduced speeds and increased fuel and machinery costs and foreign material dockage. Desiccant materials may dry up these green leaves and stems for more timely and efficient harvest but have been little used in Alabama soybean production. A series of experiments were conducted at three locations in north and central Alabama in 2006 and 2007 to investigate the effects of strobiluron fungicide application and timing on this greening effect, as well as to evaluate several harvest aid treatments to alleviate these effects. Due to record droughts, strobiluron greening effects were much reduced in 2006 and 2007. In 2006, greening differences were noted in only one of three locations between strobiluron application timings and seasonal rate treatments, with applications at R1, R3, and R1 + R3 growth stages increasing greening compared with untreated and R3 + R5 applications. Grain yield was not affected by fungicide applications at any of these locations in 2006, although small differences in seed weight were noted at one location. Desiccation increased harvested yield in 2006 at all locations, with an average increase of 2.8 bu/acre. Available data from 2007 trials will also be discussed.
