February 2006

In April 2005, mature Mexican fan palm in a home landscape in Pinellas Co., FL were observed with leaves exhibiting uneven necrosis of leaf segments, reddish-brown stripes extending the length of the petioles, and petiole cross-sections exhibited internal discoloration. The authors identified the fungus as Cocoicola californica (M. E. Barr, Ohr & M. K. Murphy) K. D. Hyde & P. F. Cannon. Until now, C. californica has only been reported from southern California and only from W. filifera.
