April 2009

The objective was to evaluate the costs for community-scale processing of oilseeds into seed meal for dairy rations and into oil for biodiesel in farm equipment. We chose canola as an oilseed as it has a high oil content, a ready market as a protein supplement in dairy rations, and the production systems for the crop are well established. Costs of production were evaluated for 28 acres of canola from field production to crushing and processing of oil into biodiesel to evaluate the economic viability of community-scale oilseed processing.
