Using grapevine powdery mildew as a case study, influences of epidemic rates, host resistance, and pathogen biology are discussed in the context of managing and predicting fruit infection. This article highlights the necessity of filling biological knowledge gaps of plant and pathogen interactions, as assumed principles often lead to a misunderstanding of epidemic development and realization.
