Chateau™ Herbicide SW Effective for Fallow Bed, Spring Burndown Applications

Valent U.S.A. Corporation.

Walnut Creek, Calif. (October 17, 2003) - California cotton growers now have a new tool to use in their fallow bed and spring burndown herbicide programs with the recent registration of Chateau™ Herbicide SW. This low-use rate, preemergent herbicide delivers long-lasting residual control of tough broadleaf weeds and grasses. Chateau also enhances the activity of burndown herbicides.

Chateau, marketed by Valent U.S.A. Corporation, provides excellent control of winter annuals including shepherd’s-purse, lambsquarters, chickweed and Malva species such as cheeseweed and common mallow. The water dispersible granular (WDG) can be applied at 2 to 3 ounces per acre as part of a preemergence fallow seedbed application 60 days prior to cotton planting. In a spring burndown application, Chateau can be tank mixed with glyphosate or paraquat and applied to actively growing weeds at 1 to 2 ounces per acre 30 days prior to cotton planting. Chateau enhances the speed of burndown and increases the weed spectrum when tank mixed with these herbicides.

“Chateau provides California growers a new class of chemistry. The active ingredient, flumioxazin, is both non-volatile and non-leaching,” said Todd Mayhew, Valent field market development specialist. “Growers will be able to eliminate weeds before they start, and maintain a clean bed throughout winter. This will also help growers preserve water in their seedbeds.”

The product binds tightly to the soil and is unlikely to move, or leach, with water from rainfall or irrigation. As a PPO inhibitor, Chateau’s mode of action is different from other commonly used herbicides. This difference makes Chateau a great tank mix partner and resistance management tool for glyphosate, triazine and ALS-resistant weeds.

Chateau fallow bed applications can be made this winter before weeds have emerged. Once weeds are in the seedbed, Chateau should be tank mixed with glyphosate or paraquat to provide quick burndown and residual control on a broad spectrum of weeds. Chateau requires ¼ inch of rainfall or irrigation for activation. Once activated, Chateau serves as a weed control barrier for seedbeds, typically lasting four to six weeks or more.

“Chateau will preserve a clean seedbed for fields targeted for cotton planting in 2004,” said Mike Ansolabehere, Valent field market developer.
