Cobra^® Herbicide Gives Peanut Growers New Option for Broadleaf Weed Control

Washington, D.C. (January 3, 2005) - Peanut growers now have a new postemergence herbicide that will control a broad spectrum of weeds that other herbicides often miss, thanks to the recent EPA registration allowing Cobra® Herbicide to be used on peanuts.

Cobra Herbicide, marketed by Valent U.S.A. Corporation, controls a wide spectrum of key broadleaf weeds in peanuts and makes a great tank mix partner with other currently registered herbicides including Cadre®, Basagran®, Pursuit®, 2,4-DB and Select® Herbicide. Valent field market development specialist John Altom said Cobra and Cadre will be a key tank mix for peanut growers.

Cobra can be applied once peanuts have reached at least six true leaves, Altom said, adding that the application may cause temporary bronzing that peanuts will quickly outgrow. Damage to the crop may occur if Cobra is applied before peanuts reach the six-leaf stage or if applied when the plant is stressed due to drought, excessive moisture or cold temperatures.

Cobra can also be applied later in the growing season to control late emerging weeds or weeds that have escaped other herbicides. It should be applied with an approved adjuvant, which can vary depending on locations. Growers should check with their local Valent sales representative for the best recommendations.
