Libertyville, IL (March 2, 2005) – Valent BioSciences Corporation (VBC) today announced that the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has approved ProVide® 10 SG for use on apples.

ProVide 10 SG is a new, improved water-soluble granule formulation of the natural plant growth regulators gibberellins A4+A7 (GA4/A7). It is the only commercially available dry formulation of this PGR class in the world. ProVide 10 SG will help growers produce apples of excellent finish, larger size and superior quality – adding value for growers, shippers and consumers.

For many years, growers have been using a first generation ProVide 2% liquid to reduce physiological russet of the apple skin, increase fruit size and improve the overall fruit finish. The new ProVide 10 SG formulation will provide these same benefits to growers while also reducing fruit cracking in the Stayman apple variety.

“ProVide 10 SG represents a second-generation, state-of-the-art improved formulation that will deliver consistent performance and outstanding results under a wide variety of growing conditions,” said Dr. Ricardo Menendez, global business manager for plant growth regulator products at VBC. “ProVide 10 SG is a new, improved formulation of GA4/A7 in the form of dry, water-soluble granules that dissolve instantly and deliver excellent, consistent performance.”

This new ProVide water soluble granule formulation is also expected to qualify for organic production. “For organic growers, this new formulation is an excellent option to increase fruit size, reduce russet and improve overall fruit finish and quality,” said Menendez.

ProVide 10 SG has been tested in the field for three seasons with excellent results. This formulation is five times more concentrated than its predecessor, so it will be easier to handle by apple growers and more convenient to ship and warehouse.

Valent U.S.A. Corporation of Walnut Creek, Calif., will distribute ProVide 10 SG, along with VBC's other agricultural products for the U.S. markets.
