New Label Shortens Vangard PHI by More Than Half for Almonds

Greensboro, North Carolina (November 28, 2006)--The California Department of Pesticide Regulation (CDPR) has approved label changes for Vangard® WG fungicide. Most important among the changes is the reduction of the preharvest interval (PHI) for almonds from 150 days to 60 days.

By allowing application later in the season, this new label gives growers more flexibility to control late season diseases like green fruit rot (jacket rot) caused by Botrytis cinerea. Vangard is registered for the suppression of this fungal disease that causes brown spots to develop on almonds and can rot the entire fruit. In years when conditions are cool and wet during bloom, green fruit rot can cause significant yield losses.

”For growers to have another choice in late-season disease control is very important,” said John Foresman, crop manager for Syngenta Crop Protection. “Not only does this allow growers to pick a product that fits the way they farm, but it also gives them a resistance management tool.”

California produces more than 80 percent of the world’s almonds, and with the current strong market, almond growers want to get the most out of their crop. To do so, they must be extra diligent about disease, insect and weed control. The updated label also allows for aerial application in almonds and stone fruit. Previously, this application was only permitted pursuant to a FIFRA Section 2(ee) recommendation.

The active ingredient in Vangard, cyprodinil, is a distinctive chemistry that is active against a wide range of difficult-to-control pathogens. It uses systemic activity to provide superior control of brown rot blossom blight caused by Monilinia spp., and in addition to green fruit rot, Vangard suppresses shot hole caused by Wilsonomyces carpophilus. Vangard can be tank-mixed and rotated with a wide variety of other products, and has an excellent environmental and safety profile.

“Syngenta is looking out for almond growers. We know their needs, like the need for more late season fungicide options, and we work with them to help fill those needs,” said Foresman.
