Field Pea Production on the Plains

South Dakota State University website

Brookings, South Dakota (July 21, 2006) - A new publication from area land-grant universities discusses growing field peas.

South Dakota State University Extension Fact Sheet FS932, "Pea Production in the High Plains," is available at county Extension offices. It is also available as a publication of the University of Wyoming and the University of Nebraska-Lincoln in those states. Or find it online as a PDF.

Authors of the publication include SDSU Extension West River Agronomist Thandiwe Nleya and SDSU Research Associate John Rickertsen.

Nleya said the 11-page publication draws on research done by SDSU and other land-grant universities in the region to assemble an overview of issues to consider when growing field peas. Topics include varieties; performance in feeding rotations; field pea in crop rotations; seedbed and planting; fertilizer management; weed control; diseases; insects; harvesting issues; and markets and economic considerations.

Refer to the publication for more details.
