Posted 19 February 2007. Crop Management. Weed Control in Pulse Crops South Dakota State University. www.sdstate.edu Brookings, South Dakota (February 5, 2007)- A South Dakota State University publication updated for 2007 provides tips for controlling weeds in pulse crops.
SDSU Extension Fact Sheet 525-PC, “Weed Control in Pulse Crops: Dry Edible Beans, Field Peas, Garbanzo Beans, Lentils,” is available online at agbiopubs.sdstate.edu. Or ask for it at your county Extension office. SDSU Extension Weeds Specialist Mike Moechnig said pulse crops are weak competitors with weeds, so planning an effective weed control program is one of the keys to profitable production. The 24-page guide is based on SDSU weed control experiments and is designed to help growers make their own decisions on herbicides for their operations. It discusses rates, tank mixes and combinations, and timing of applications. The pulse crop guide is one of a series of weed management guides updated annually by SDSU Extension Weeds Specialist Mike Moechnig, SDSU Extension Integrated Pest Management Coordinator Darrell Deneke, and SDSU Distinguished Professor Emeritus Leon Wrage.
