The publication lists recommended as well as acceptable winter wheat varieties for production in South Dakota in 2009. SDSU research associate John Rickertsen says the top-performing varieties East River in 2008 were Smoky Hill, Overland, NuDakota (white), Wendy (white), Expedition, and Fuller. SDSU Extension West River Agronomist Thandiwe Nleya said the publication also offers details about seven successful production tips for winter wheat. • Choose a variety of winter wheat with good agronomic characteristics that is both recommended in your area and has preformed well in the area in the past several years. • Direct seed into standing stubble for better protection. • Control grassy weeds and volunteer wheat crop two weeks prior to planting. • Plant winter wheat during the recommended time, Sept. 15 through Oct. 10. • Plant wheat at a depth of 1.5 to 2 inches in a firm seedbed. • Plant the recommended amount of seed, 22 pure live seeds per square foot. • Apply fertilizer based on soil test results and yield expectations.
