Greensboro, NC (August 2, 2002) Syngenta Crop Protection announced today registration for LUMAX™, a new pre-emergence corn herbicide. LUMAX offers substantial benefits to U.S. corn growers by delivering true one-pass weed control on most acres and a new standard in crop safety. LUMAX is registered for use on field corn, seed corn and corn grown for silage and will be available for sale in the northern Corn Belt and the triazine-resistant weed areas of the Delmarva peninsula and southeastern Pennsylvania for the 2003 use season.

“Many growers have sought consistent one-pass weed control that eliminates early season weed competition without jeopardizing corn safety,” said Matt Comer, LUMAX brand manager. “LUMAX can deliver these benefits. LUMAX will deliver unprecedented control of the toughest annual broadleaf weeds in corn including those resistant to ALS-inhibiting and triazine herbicides, as well as broadleaf weeds increasingly tolerant to glyphosate herbicides.”

Weed Control

A broad-spectrum, selective herbicide, LUMAX controls the toughest weeds in corn, including the major annual broadleaves and grasses. Also, LUMAX contains three modes of action providing superior control of weeds that have demonstrated reduced control or resistance to ALS-inhibiting, triazine and glyphosate herbicides making it a valuable resistance management tool. With six weeks of residual control, LUMAX will deliver the unmatched benefit of the longest lasting weed control of any pre-emergence corn herbicide.

“This product delivers pre-emergence weed control in corn like no other product we’ve seen before,” said Mike Johnson, LUMAX technical brand manager. “LUMAX is superior in delivering early season broadleaf and grass weed control, thus reducing or eliminating early season weed competition that can substantially reduce crop yield potential.”

Crop Safety

LUMAX has demonstrated unprecedented crop safety across hybrids grown for seed, field corn and corn grown for silage.

“We believe the grower will realize flexibility across corn hybrids and cultural practices that will prove to be very attractive,” Johnson said.

Field Trials

A number of experimental field trials designed to demonstrate the performance of LUMAX are established throughout the key corn-growing areas. Growers and retailers can view these trials by contacting their local Syngenta sales representative or their local retailer.

Syngenta plans to make LUMAX available for use in selected states in the northern Corn Belt for the 2003 use season. More information about LUMAX is available from your local retailer, your local Syngenta sales representative, or at www.syngentacropprotection.com.
