Pioneer Research Shows GauchoŽ Seed-Applied Insecticide Helps Corn Plants Get Strong Start Pioneer Hi-Bred International, Inc. www.pioneer.com. Des Moines, Iowa (September 6, 2002) - Two years of research conducted by agronomy scientists at Pioneer Hi-Bred International, Inc., show corn hybrids protected with GauchoŽ seed-applied insecticide sustain less damage from early-season secondary corn insects and get off to a better start. That can translate into better yields at harvest. This safe and effective corn insecticide will be available for the 2003 growing season on selected hybrids from Pioneer. Gaucho applied to the kernel helps protect germinating seed from a number of early-season insects, including wireworms, seedcorn maggots, imported fire ants and flea beetles. This insecticide also offers protection against white grubs during the emergence and seedling stages. "Growers who purchase seed with Gaucho seed treatment have peace of mind knowing they have effective protection from early-season insects," says Murt McLeod, Pioneer agronomy research manager. "This extra protection helps the corn crop get off to a healthy, early start."
Research Shows Value In research trials conducted during the spring of 2002 by Pioneer in Nebraska, seed protected with Gaucho prevented plant stand loss by 28 percent compared to untreated plots. McLeod said the majority of loss in the untreated plot was due to wireworm pressure. "We have studied this insecticide at different locations and found it protects the corn seedlings from insect damage, helping establish a healthy stand, which can create a significant difference at harvest," McLeod says. Studies conducted in Minnesota in 2001 showed PioneerŽ brand hybrids treated with Gaucho yielded 57 bushels more per acre at harvest compared to untreated plots, where the major insect pressure was true white grubs. In another 2001 plot located in Nebraska where wireworm infestation was significant, seed treated with Gaucho delivered 24 more bushels per acre over untreated checks, reports McLeod.
Convenient and Safe "Gaucho offers Pioneer customers a convenient and safe pest control option if their situation calls for it," says Kyle Whitaker, technology launch manager for Pioneer. "This insecticide is precisely applied to every corn kernel so the grower does not have to directly handle the insecticide. This helps the grower save time and reduces exposure to the insecticide."
