Bexar Insecticide: A New Rotation Option for Control of Pear Psylla

Wilmington, Delaware (July 1, 2018)--Bexar® Insecticide from Nichino America, Inc. is now registered for use in pears to control pear psylla and pear rust mite as well as suppression of codling moth.1
The active ingredient in Bexar, tolfenpyrad, works by blocking cellular respiration and is extremely effective on all stages of pear psylla: eggs, nymphs and adults. Bexar halts feeding damage immediately, thus controlling the pest usually within 24 to 48 hours. Bexar belongs to the METI (Mitochondrial Electron Transport Inhibitor) class of compounds, IRAC Group 21A Insecticide. For effective resistance management, Bexar should be used in rotation with insecticides of different modes of action.
“After much anticipation, Bexar insecticide is now available to help control pear psylla,” says Alex Truszkowski, Product Manager for Bexar. “While the preferred window of application is petal fall through first cover to ensure maximum coverage is achieved, Bexar should be able to make an immediate impact,” Truszkowski adds.
Bexar is a contact foliar insecticide which means that sufficient spray coverage is essential. Nichino America recommends that Bexar be used with a minimum water volume of 100 gallons per acre by ground. Based on the label, pear growers can make two applications per year at a 21 to 27 fl oz rate. The label also states a 12-hour reentry interval (REI) and a 14-day preharvest interval (PHI).
