Raleigh, North Carolina (May 11, 2010)--Insect pest damage continues to be an issue for sweet corn, field corn, cotton and tobacco growers. The powerful performance of Belt™ SC insecticide from Bayer CropScience protects a diverse crop mix from worm pest pressures. As a result, growers improve their yield potential and crop quality.

“From an insect resistance management point of view, Belt is a sound partner in a properly designed resistance management program,” said Lee Hall, product manager, Bayer CropScience. “We all know that worm pests, including the budworm, bollworm/earworm, armyworm and looper families, are especially capable of developing resistance to insecticides.”

Belt manages worm pests from the early to late instar stage. It provides the highest protection against plant and fruit damage, especially when applied in conjunction with careful scouting and treatment of early threshold pest infestations.

“The interesting thing about Belt is how it works on these pests,” Hall said. “Belt activates a muscle contraction that results in rapid cessation of feeding, followed by paralysis then larval death.”

Belt poses minimal risk to beneficial insects. In today’s multifaceted farmscape, growers are looking across a number of crops, and a material that complements the producer in his Integrated Pest Management (IPM) program efforts is crucial.

Belt will not flare mites and is not harmful to parasitoids, syrphid flies, lacewings, predatory bugs, predatory mites, adult and larval ladybird beetles. In addition to corn, cotton and tobacco, Belt is also registered for use on pome and stone fruits, tree nuts and grapes.
