Focus on Potato
Periderm disorder syndrome (PDS), formerly called “pink eye,” is a complex and costly problem for potato growers, and to date, there are no means of preventing or reversing PDS development. Edward C. Lulai explains the nature of the disease and provides practitioners with the information needed to make decisions about the storage, sale, and processing of afflicted potatoes.
Focus on Cotton
The potentially devastating race 4 (FOV4) of the Fusarium wilt of cotton pathogen was found in the El Paso area in 2017, posing a serious threat to cotton production in this region and perhaps other regions, as well. Thomas Isakeit discusses how to recognize and manage the disease and hopes to raise awareness of it in the eastern U.S. cotton production community.
Soil health can influence both crop yields and production costs, yet many cotton producers don’t know how to develop and maintain healthy soils. John Zak addresses taking care of the soil microbiome, which is essential to promoting plant growth, increasing soil carbon, maintaining nutrient availability, and building soil structure.
