At Chapadão do Sul County, located in the northeast of Mato Grosso do Sul State, the soybean rust was observed for the first time in the 2001/2002 season, more precisely at the end of February, when most fields were in the advanced phenologic development stage and the disease pressure was already high, causing average losses of 14.0%. In the 2002/2003 season, the disease was only detected in the region in late January 2003, after some farmers had started chemical control. Rust severity was low and farmers obtained a good disease control. In 2003/2004, rust appeared in mid-December 2003 and was effectively managed, with few exceptions, when farmers delayed the control measures. In 2004/2005, the disease appeared in late December and was satisfactorily managed too. In 2005/2006, rust appeared earlier then last seasons, in late November, causing losses estimated on 30.0%. Besides, the average number of fungicide sprays in this season was 4.5 to 5. In 2006/2007, with the knowledge and new technologies generated by the Anti-Rust Consortium, a broad research proposal sponsored by Embrapa with national scope, the rust control was effective in Chapadão do Sul County and region, with an average of fungicide spray of 2.5.
