Efficacy of F500 fungicide in the control of Asian soybean rust (Phakopsora pachyrhizi Syd.) in soybean crop

ASR is a key disease in the soybean crop in Brazil. The objective of this study was to evaluate different ready-mixes of azoles + strobilurines fungicides against Asian rust in soybean. Ten trials were performed during the 2006/2007 season—five in preventative conditions and five in curative conditions in different regions (Campos Novos, SC; Ponta Grossa and Maua da Serra, PR; Rondonopolis, MT; and Goiania, GO states). The experimental design involved randomized blocks, four replications. Different ready-mix fungicides were sprayed to control Asian rust, and applications were carried out in both preventative and curative conditions. For the preventative conditions, all treatments were treated at first symptom or flowering period (R1–R2) and treated again in grain formation (R5.1–R5.2). The curative conditions were treated at 2% of severity and treated again 14–21 days after first application. Application (CO2 backpack sprayer) with Teejet nozzles (XR 8001 or XR 110015), 40 lb pol–2, and a spray volume of 150 liters ha–1. The severity of the disease was evaluated by the aid of the diagrammatic scale proposed by Canteri and Godoy (2003). The results of the trials show the ranking of the treatments as follows: F500 + metconazole (65 + 40 g a.i. ha–1) > F500 + epoxiconazole (66.5 + 25 g a.i. ha–1) > azoxystrobin + ciproconazole (60 + 24 g a.i. ha–1) + specific adjuvant (0.5% v/v) > tryfloxystrobin + cyproconazole (60 + 20 g a.i. ha–1) + specific adjuvant (0.25% v/v) > tryfloxystrobin + tebuconazol (50 + 100 g a.i. ha–1) + specific adjuvant (0.25% v/v). All ready-mixes, regardless of the formulation composition, greatly reduced the severity of the disease. However, it was observed that ready-mixes that contain fungicide F500® (BASF) had longer residual control and better yield than did others.
